Many of our users have requested guidance on how to properly use oil in your hair. Below is information for beginners and those who have preciously discovered the magic of using hair oil!
For years, the beauty industry stayed away from all things oily. We are just now learning how wrong that was! No matter your hair type ~ dry, straight, wavy, curly, coily, even oily ~ your hair can benefit from the right kind of oil!
Some oils coat for protection and shine, while others penetrate for strength and moisture. Some are applied to the entire shaft, while others work better on the scalp and roots.
So, what types of oils work best for your hair, and how should you use them?
Oils that are appropriate for hair and skin are called natural oils; they are not processed, contain no other ingredients, and are left in their natural state. There are two primary types of natural oils that benefit hair: oils that penetrate and oils that coat.
Oils that Penetrate
These are oils that can get into your hair shaft and moisturize from the inside out. The oils that can penetrate the hair shaft are coconut oil, olive oil, and avocado oil. However, all penetration is not equal. Coconut oil can penetrate the hair shaft much deeper than the others, as it contains short chain fatty acids. The molecules that make up this chain are small enough to be deposited into the hair’s cuticle. Avocado and olive oil penetrate the hair shaft ever so slightly as their molecules are a little bigger than coconut oil. The Journal of Cosmetic Medicine found that coconut oil was “the only oil found to reduce the protein loss remarkably for both damaged and undamaged hair.” In this category, coconut oil is the clear winner.
Oils that Coat
These are oils that sit on top of your hair and don’t get into the shaft; they simply coat the hair shaft. These oils are great because they can be used as a heat protectant, to add shine, and to lock in the moisture that penetrating oils have deposited into your hair. Oils like jojoba oil, grapeseed oil, castor oil, argan oil, and sweet almond oil, just to name a few, are all oils that coat the hair shaft and have various benefits.
TrueCoconut hair products were created with ingredients to provide the best of both oil types in one product. The Coconut Oil Treatment contains three simple, cosmetic-grade ingredients: coconut oil, grapeseed oil, and sweet almond oil. TrueCoconut Shampoo and Conditioner also have coconut oil, olive oil and jojoba oil, to ensure your hair gets the benefits of the best natural oils!
How to Apply Hair Oil
Apply the oil starting at the roots and massaging into the scalp. Once the roots and scalp are saturated, rub oil throughout the hair shaft. Leave on for at least one hour. The longer the better! Overnight is A-O-K. Rinse the oil out and shampoo once or twice to remove any oil residue. Follow with conditioner and a blast of cold water to seal the hair cuticle. Use as often as you like, but at least once per week, to improve the strength and shine of your hair!
